The problem

Gmail provided a wonderful service when it was rolled out in 2004.

Spam has gotten worse over the years and had become increasingly problematic recently. One would be excused for thinking a tech juggernaut such as Google could handle the situation. When advertising is a main income, one could easily argue that blocking spam is not good for business. Their calculations may now be less about whether something is spam or not and rather how much spam can they let through without users fleeing.
